Arizona High School Graduation Requirements: 2026 Update

If you have a teen approaching graduation in Arizona, or you’re a student counting credits yourself, knowing exactly what the state requires is the first step. Arizona’s diploma requirements are set in state statute and updated by the Arizona State Board of Education. Here’s how they break down in 2026.

22-credit minimum

Every Arizona public school student needs at least 22 credits to graduate, distributed across these subject areas per the Arizona Department of Education:

  • English: 4 credits
  • Math: 4 credits, including Algebra II or its equivalent
  • Science: 3 credits, lab-based, with at least one each in physical, life, and earth/space science
  • Social Studies: 3 credits (1 American History, 1 World History/Geography, 0.5 American Government, 0.5 Economics)
  • Career and Technical Education or Fine Arts: 1 credit
  • Electives: 7 credits

Districts and charter schools can require more, but cannot require less. Some Tucson districts follow the 22-credit requirement exactly; others add extras. Check your school’s specific policy.

The Arizona Civics Test

Since 2017, every Arizona high school graduate has had to pass a civics test based on the U.S. naturalization exam (ARS § 15-701.01). The test asks 100 questions drawn from the USCIS naturalization study materials.

As of January 1, 2026, the passing score has increased from 60/100 to 70/100 for the graduating class of 2026 and beyond. Schools may give the test as early as 7th grade, and students can retake it as many times as needed.

What’s new in 2026

  • Civics passing score raised to 70/100 for the class of 2026 and beyond, up from 60/100. Plan study time accordingly.
  • Computer Science substitution. Computer science coursework can substitute for one credit of math (above Algebra I) or science under specific conditions. Confirm with your registrar before relying on this.
  • Mastery-based progression. Arizona statute permits schools to award credit for demonstrated mastery rather than seat-time. This is how schools like Rose Academies let motivated students accelerate while still meeting state standards.

District-specific add-ons

Many of Arizona’s traditional districts (Marana Unified, Vail, Amphitheater, TUSD) set their own requirements above the 22-credit requirement. Common additions include a financial-literacy course, an extra English credit, or community-service hours. Always check directly with your school registrar.

What if you’re behind on credits?

This is the most common question we hear from families. The answer in Arizona is rarely “you can’t graduate.” It’s “here’s the recovery path.” Options include summer school, mastery-based courses that move faster than traditional ones, and enrollment in an alternative high school that specializes in credit recovery. Our companion post on how to catch up in school walks through it in detail.

Quick checklist for seniors

By 12th grade, your student should be able to check off:

  • 22 credits earned (or a clear path to earn the remaining ones)
  • Civics test passed (70 or more correct out of 100)
  • Any district-specific requirements completed
  • Complete the FAFSA (if applicable)

Print this list. Bring it to a counselor meeting. If anything is in question, address it now, not in May of senior year.

FAQs

What is the absolute minimum number of credits to graduate in Arizona?

22 credits. Districts can require more, but not fewer.

What’s the new civics test passing score?

Beginning January 1, 2026, students must answer 70 of 100 questions correctly. The previous threshold was 60.

Does an alternative high school diploma count the same as a traditional one?

Yes. If the school is Arizona-accredited and meets state requirements, the diploma is identical in standing for college, military, and employment.
